US Homeland Security Chief Defends Plan to Live-Stream Military Mass Shooter’s Execution

12 Oct, 2026 10:09 AM

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin has stated that live-streaming the execution of the perpetrator behind the deadly 2009 Fort Hood military base shooting poses no additional threat to national security. The case involves Nidal Hasan, a former U.S. Army psychiatrist who opened fire at the Fort Hood military post in Texas in 2009. The mass shooting resulted in the deaths of 13 people and left more than 30 others injured. Hasan was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death, with his execution date scheduled for December 3. A major international controversy erupted after plans emerged from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the Pentagon to publicly broadcast Hasan’s execution by firing squad. Addressing the backlash, Mullin clarified that viewing the live broadcast would be entirely optional, emphasizing that no individual will be forced to watch the execution. Despite assurances from U.S. officials, the proposal has drawn sharp international condemnation. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham strongly denounced the prospect of a publicly broadcast execution, describing the plan as abhorrent.
