Punjab Assembly Likely to Convene Monsoon Session in First Week of August

The Punjab Assembly is likely to convene its Monsoon Session during the first week of August, with the state government preparing for a week-long sitting. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is expected to announce the schedule for the session within the next one or two days, according to official sources. Sources indicated that the government is planning to conclude the session before August 15. Earlier, there had been speculation that a special session of the Punjab Assembly might be convened. However, the government is now preparing for a regular Monsoon Session. The Chief Minister has initiated discussions on the agenda for the upcoming session, and deliberations are underway regarding the legislative business to be taken up. Among the key proposals expected to be introduced is an amendment to the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. The move comes after Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj of Sri Akal Takht Sahib directed on June 29 that the Act should be amended within one month. Sikh ministers and MLAs had also appeared before Sri Akal Takht Sahib on the same day. According to sources, the Punjab government may seek additional time from the Sri Akal Takht Sahib Secretariat, as the deadline for amending the Act expires on July 29. Another important legislative matter likely to be taken up during the Monsoon Session is the Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026. The ordinance, which recently received the approval of the Governor of Punjab, is expected to be introduced in the Assembly to be enacted into law. This will be the final Monsoon Session of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government during its current term. Several important issues concerning Punjab are expected to be discussed in the House. Sources also indicate that the issue related to the film "Satluj" may come up during the proceedings.
