Indian shooter Esha Singh won the silver medal in the women’s 25m pistol individual event at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya after a closely fought final that went through multiple shoot-offs.
The 21-year-old Hyderabad shooter, who is the reigning world No. 1, finished with 38 points, the same score as China’s Xiao Jiaruixuan. Esha eventually missed out on gold by one shot in the final shoot-off.
Esha had to negotiate five consecutive shoot-offs during the competition. She won three of them to remain in contention for silver before facing two further shoot-offs against Xiao in the battle for gold.
North Korea’s Kim Hyon Suk secured the bronze medal after losing the shoot-off to Esha and finishing with a score of 34.
Earlier, two-time Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker failed to qualify for the final. Manu recorded 579 points in qualification and finished 11th, while Esha scored 580 to enter the final in eighth position.
Bhaker also missed out on a medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event earlier in the Games.
India’s women’s team also missed out on a medal in the 25m pistol team event. Esha Singh, Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat finished fifth with a combined score of 1727-56x. China won gold with 1743-68x, South Korea took silver with 1735-65x and Chinese Taipei claimed bronze with 1734-48x.
Sarnobat finished 30th individually with a score of 568 after recording 39 in the fourth series, which proved costly for India’s team medal hopes.
Ankita Raina-Rutuja Bhosale Exit Women’s Doubles
India’s women’s doubles campaign in tennis ended in the first round after Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale suffered a close defeat against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva and Anna Danilina.
The Indian pair lost 7-5, 3-6, 5-10 in a contest decided by a match tie-break.
In men’s singles, India’s Sumit Nagal was leading South Korea’s Hong Seongchan 3-2 in the opening set when rain interrupted the match. The contest is scheduled to resume on Tuesday.
India Exit Women’s Sepaktakraw Doubles
India were unable to reach the semifinals of the women’s doubles sepaktakraw competition. The Indian team finished last in its group on Monday.
India Reach Cricket Semifinals Without Playing Quarterfinal
The Indian men’s cricket team advanced to the Asian Games semifinals after its quarterfinal against Afghanistan was abandoned because of inclement weather.
India, the defending champions, progressed on the basis of their No. 1 position in the ICC T20I rankings, while Afghanistan are ranked 10th.
India will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Nepal and Sri Lanka, which is scheduled for Tuesday. If that match is also abandoned, Sri Lanka will advance to the semifinal against India because of its higher ranking.
