Canada Not Seeking EU Membership, Prime Minister Mark Carney Clarifies

14 Sep, 2026 10:57 AM

Prime Minister Mark Carney has clarified that Canada is not seeking to join the European Union, addressing recent speculations regarding the nation's evolving diplomatic ties with Europe. Speaking to reporters in Toronto, Carney emphasized that while Canada has no intention of applying for EU membership, the government will initiate talks to establish a unique and robust partnership with the bloc. Addressing the geopolitical climate, Carney highlighted that Canada and European nations share common values, priorities, and strategic interests across several critical sectors. He noted that in an increasingly insecure and fragmented global landscape, it is essential for allied nations to stand together and reinforce their ties. The Prime Minister's remarks follow ongoing public discussions and media speculation suggesting that Canada might pursue a special status or closer integration with the bloc. However, a senior Canadian government official dismissed those reports, describing them as exaggerated. Canada and the European Union have already concluded agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in defense, security, and other strategic domains. Further diplomatic engagements are scheduled, with Carney set to travel to Europe this week to address the European Parliament. Additionally, a Canada-European Union summit is anticipated to take place in Canada toward the end of October.
