Mai Subhai Bugti, Trailblazing Female Artist, Killed in Pakistan

A tragic incident has shaken Pakistan’s Balochistan province as a female Baloch folk singer was shot dead in Dera Bugti. Local media reported on Thursday that Mai Subhai Bugti, a pioneering artist from the Bugti tribe, was gunned down by unidentified assailants. According to police, armed men on motorcycles opened fire on Mai Subhai Bugti near the outskirts of Dera Bugti before fleeing the scene. The singer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died instantly. Authorities confirmed that she was among the first female singers from the Bugti tribe, making her a significant cultural figure in the region. Police have registered a case against the unknown attackers and transported the body to a hospital for medico-legal procedures. Officials stated that this is the first time a female singer has been targeted in Dera Bugti. The motive behind the killing remains unclear as investigations continue. This incident underscores the growing concern over violence against women in Pakistan. In July, Islamabad-based organization Sahil reported 3,172 cases of gender-based violence in the first six months of 2026, including 18 cases involving transgender individuals. The report highlighted alarming figures: 644 murders, 514 cases of torture, 462 kidnappings, 363 suicides, 280 rapes, 175 injuries, 132 honor killings, and 21 other crimes such as harassment, gang rape, and pornography. Victims were predominantly young, with 334 aged between 21–30 years, 306 between 11–20 years, and 120 between 31–40 years. In 71 percent of cases, the victims’ ages were not recorded. The killing of Mai Subhai Bugti has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger protections for women in Pakistan, particularly those breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
