Punjab Government Deploys 200 Officials to Fix Power Plants as Electricity Demand Surges

Punjab Power Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond announced that long power outages will come to an end in the state starting tomorrow, September 15. Speaking in Ludhiana, the minister assured residents that private power plants have been repaired to restore stability to the state's electricity supply grid. To expedite repairs and improve power distribution, the state administration deployed approximately 200 government employees to oversee work at the power facilities. Minister Sond also highlighted enhanced support for the agricultural sector, stating that farmers are now receiving 10 hours of daily power supply, up from the previous allocation of 8 hours. He noted that peak power demand in the state has registered a significant increase of 3,500 MW compared to last year. The announcement comes as electricity demand in Punjab remains high, consistently hovering above 16,000 MW. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) continues to generate power from multiple sources; however, due to ongoing coal shortages, total local state generation has reached only 5,743 MW. To bridge the gap and fulfill consumer demand across sectors, PSPCL is relying heavily on power drawn from the central grid pool.
