PM Modi, Canadian PM Mark Carney to Hold Key Talks Amid Thaw in Ties

02 Mar, 2026 07:34 AM

A significant diplomatic development is underway as long-standing tensions between India and Canada appear to be easing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney in New Delhi on Monday for a crucial round of talks. The meeting is being seen as a major step toward restoring bilateral relations, which had been strained since 2023. Both nations are now working to move past the bitterness that arose over the Khalistan issue and re-establish constructive engagement. The discussions are expected to open new avenues for cooperation in key sectors such as trade, energy, and emerging technologies. A major outcome of the meeting could also emerge in the field of nuclear energy cooperation. India is actively working to clear the path for uranium imports from Canada, which could significantly strengthen its energy sector. Upon arriving in Delhi, Prime Minister Carney stated on social media that India’s demand for electricity, advanced technology, and infrastructure is growing rapidly, and Canada has much to offer in these areas. He further emphasized that his visit aims to explore new opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers. It is noteworthy that bilateral ties had deteriorated sharply in 2023 following the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Allegations made by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against India had escalated tensions between the two countries. The situation worsened to the extent that both nations expelled senior diplomatic officials. However, the situation has since improved. Following Mark Carney’s electoral victory in April 2025, efforts to repair diplomatic relations began gaining momentum. Senior officials from both sides have now returned to their respective positions, signaling a renewed phase of engagement and the beginning of a more positive chapter in India-Canada relations.
