CRPF ASI Shoots Two Colleagues Dead, Dies by Suicide at Assam Camp

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer allegedly shot dead two of his colleagues, injured another, and later died by suicide after shooting himself at a CRPF camp in Assam's Nagaon district on Tuesday, police said. According to Nagaon Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Parmita Sarkar, the incident took place at around 7 a.m. at the 34 Battalion camp in Katimari. She said that ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, who was on duty at the camp's main gate, opened fire on his fellow personnel. After the shooting, the ASI turned the weapon on himself and died on the spot. Two Personnel Killed, One Seriously Injured Police said Head Constable/GD Vishnu Prasad Baghel and Sub-Inspector/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav sustained fatal gunshot injuries and died at the scene. Another CRPF personnel, ASI/Mane Govind Shripul, was seriously injured in the firing. He was initially admitted to a private hospital and was later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. Senior officials of the CRPF and Assam Police reached the camp soon after the incident, and an investigation has been ordered. Sequence of Events Providing details of the incident, Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das said that ASI Ballani Premabaram, a resident of Andhra Pradesh, did not receive his assigned weapon while reporting for duty at the CRPF camp's main gate on Tuesday morning. According to the SSP, Premabaram then collected an INSAS rifle from the guard room and proceeded to the rear side of the quarter guard, where he allegedly opened fire on Vishnu Prasad Baghel, who died on the spot. Police further said that Premabaram then shot Ramnawal Singh Yadav, who had arrived from Lucknow for document verification. Yadav also died at the scene. The officer subsequently fired at Mane Govind Shripul, leaving him critically injured. After carrying out the shooting, Premabaram entered Barrack B/171 and shot himself, resulting in his death. Police said the investigation is being conducted jointly by the CRPF and the Assam Police to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
