A three-year-old girl who fell into an open 200-foot-deep borewell while playing in Sihi village of Faridabad on Sunday evening has died, despite an intensive rescue operation that lasted nearly 10 hours.
 

The child was pulled out of the borewell at around 4 am on Monday and was immediately rushed to a private hospital. However, doctors declared her dead upon arrival. A senior police officer said the body has been kept in the mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
 

Multiple agencies, including Haryana Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Municipal Corporation and the Health Department, participated in the overnight rescue operation.
 

According to an NDRF official, the force received information about the incident at around 8 pm on Sunday. An NDRF team reached the site from Ghaziabad at approximately 9 pm, by which time personnel from other departments were already engaged in rescue efforts.
 

SDRF officials said the borewell had remained abandoned for several years and contained water at a depth of about 125 feet, creating major challenges for the rescue teams. The child was reportedly trapped upside down at a depth of nearly 200 feet inside the borewell.
 

After hours of painstaking efforts, rescuers managed to pull the girl out by gripping her legs. However, officials said she showed no signs of movement when she was brought to the surface.
 

The incident has triggered concerns among local residents in Sector 8, who alleged that the tragedy could have been prevented if the borewell had been properly secured. Residents questioned the safety measures taken around the abandoned structure.
 

Responding to the concerns, Faridabad Municipal Corporation Executive Engineer Sanjeev Kumar said the borewell had been sealed with a cover around 15 years ago. He added that the civic body had not received any information regarding the removal of the cover.
 

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over unattended and inadequately secured borewells, which continue to pose a serious safety risk in residential and rural areas.
