Fresh snowfall has been reported at Hemkund Sahib and surrounding high-altitude regions, covering the revered shrine and nearby mountains in a blanket of white. The change in weather has transformed the landscape, attracting the attention of pilgrims visiting the sacred site while also increasing challenges along the trekking route.
Snowfall in the higher reaches and rainfall in lower areas of the Chamoli district have led to a significant drop in temperatures. The snow-covered mountain ranges have become a major attraction for devotees, who are not only paying their respects at the gurdwara but are also witnessing the region's scenic natural beauty.
Situated at an altitude of nearly 15,000 feet above sea level, Hemkund Sahib is highly sensitive to weather changes, with even minor fluctuations having a considerable impact on temperatures. Reports indicate that snowfall continued in several higher-altitude areas of Chamoli on Saturday.
Weather conditions near Hemkund Sahib remained cold, with temperatures expected to range between 7 and 11 degrees Celsius. The morning temperature was reported to be around 9 degrees Celsius, while the possibility of further rain and snowfall remained.
Slippery Trekking Route Raises Safety Concerns
The fresh snowfall has made several sections of the pedestrian route leading to Hemkund Sahib slippery, prompting authorities to advise pilgrims to move with caution.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, personnel from the Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed at various points along the route to assist visitors and ensure that the pilgrimage continues smoothly.
Officials on duty have been helping pilgrims navigate difficult stretches of the trail. In some locations, security personnel have been offering direct assistance to help visitors cross slippery sections safely. Authorities are also maintaining close monitoring of the route to prevent any untoward incidents during the yatra.
Security and Weather Monitoring Continue
At Ghangaria, an important transit point for the Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage, police teams are closely tracking weather developments and route conditions. Necessary instructions are being issued to personnel based on changing circumstances.
Police and SDRF officials have repeatedly urged pilgrims to remain alert and take extra precautions while travelling in view of the prevailing weather conditions. Continued rainfall and snowfall in the upper reaches of Chamoli district have further intensified the cold.
Pilgrim Footfall Remains Strong
Despite the weather-related challenges, pilgrim turnout at Hemkund Sahib remains significant this year. According to available figures, approximately 3.40 lakh pilgrims had visited the shrine by September 25.
With the pilgrimage season still underway, authorities expect more devotees to arrive in the coming days, while weather and safety arrangements continue to remain a priority.
