Vinesh Phogat Misses Asian Games Team Selection Following Trial Loss

30 May, 2026 04:51 PM

Indian woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s hopes of earning a place in the Indian contingent for the 2026 Asian Games came to an end after she suffered a defeat in the semi-finals of the selection trials held on Saturday. Competing in the 53 kg weight category, Phogat faced wrestler Meenakshi Goyat in the semi-final bout. Goyat emerged victorious with a 6-4 win, knocking Phogat out of the trials and ending her chances of securing a berth in the Indian team for the upcoming Asian Games. The defeat marked a significant setback for Phogat, who had been aiming to qualify for the prestigious continental event. With the semi-final loss, she was unable to progress further in the selection process and missed out on a place in the national squad. It may be recalled that the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had recently imposed a ban on Phogat from participating in domestic competitions until June 26, 2026, citing anti-doping regulations. Following the decision, Phogat challenged the ban by filing a petition in the Delhi High Court. A division bench ruled in her favour, allowing her to continue her pursuit of selection. Subsequently, the WFI approached the Supreme Court seeking to prevent Phogat from participating in the trials. However, the apex court permitted her to compete in the Asian Games 2026 selection trials, observing that she is an outstanding wrestler who has brought recognition to the country. The Supreme Court had stated, “Vinesh is an excellent wrestler and has made the country proud. For now, she is allowed to participate in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games.” Despite receiving legal clearance to compete, Phogat’s campaign ended in the semi-finals, bringing her Asian Games qualification hopes to a close.
