36 Organisations Discuss Drug Abuse and Police Action in Punjab, Decide on Village-Level Campaign

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) held a discussion at Kisan Bhawan in Chandigarh on Sunday on issues including drug abuse among Punjab’s youth, alleged police action and other social concerns.
Leaders of 36 organisations representing farmers, workers, employees, religious groups, social organisations and youth participated in the meeting. The discussions focused on ways to address drug abuse in the state and concerns related to police action, along with issues affecting the farming community.
During the meeting, the participating organisations decided to put up boards in villages across Punjab highlighting issues related to drugs, police action and farmers ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections. They also decided to question political parties on these issues.
SKM (Non-Political) national convenor Jagjit Singh Dallewal, Baldev Singh Sirsa, Satnam Singh Baheru, Amarjit Singh, Sukhdev Singh Bhojraj and Manjit Singh Rai said leaders of around three dozen organisations participated in the discussion.
According to the leaders, participants put forward their views on measures to address drug abuse and police action in Punjab. They said a committee had also been formed to bring together organisations working in the public interest on a common platform before launching a movement on these issues.
Satnam Singh Bagrian, Kaka Singh Kotra, Ajaypal Singh Brar, Harcharan Singh Hawara, Paramjit Singh Ghazi, Paramjit Singh Mand, Roman Jeet Singh, Sukhwinder Singh Dhillon, Amarinder Singh Happy, Malkit Singh Malwai, Shera Athwal, Rajinder Singh Jafrawal, Sonu Aulakh, Baljit Singh Taggar, Kawaljit Singh Khushalpur, Gurdeep Singh Bathinda, Lakha Sidhana, Navdeep Jalwhera, Bhana Sidhu and Mohanjit Singh Sheron, among others, also shared their views during the meeting.
The organisations said their proposed village-level outreach would focus on raising questions concerning drug abuse, police action and farmers’ issues with political parties in the run-up to the Assembly elections.
