Punjab Native Dies in Canada; Police Charge Live-in Partner with Murder

A tragic incident from Edmonton, Canada, has left the Punjabi community in shock after a 23-year-old woman from Punjab was allegedly strangled to death by her live-in partner. The deceased has been identified as Damanpreet Kaur (23), a resident of Samrala in Ludhiana district. According to the available information, Damanpreet moved to Canada nearly five years ago on a study visa after taking a loan. After completing her studies, she began working in Edmonton. During her time as a student, she met Ritesh (22), a resident of Delhi. Their friendship later developed into a relationship, and the two had been living together in a live-in arrangement. On July 9, Edmonton Police received an emergency call from a residence. Officers responding to the call found Damanpreet unconscious and immediately shifted her to a hospital. She later succumbed to her injuries on July 12, where doctors declared her dead. A post-mortem examination conducted on July 14 confirmed that Damanpreet's death was not natural but was caused by strangulation, according to the medical examiner. Following the investigation, Canadian police arrested her live-in partner, Ritesh, and registered a murder case against him. Further legal proceedings are underway. The accused is reported to be a resident of Delhi. Meanwhile, Canadian media reports state that a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover the expenses of transporting Damanpreet's mortal remains to India and performing her last rites. The incident has left her family and the Punjabi community deeply saddened.
