03 Mar, 2026 11:54 AM

Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh on Tuesday announced that the Central Government will re-examine the feasibility of setting up a nuclear power plant in Patiala. The announcement was made during a special interactive session on “Challenges and Opportunities for Punjab,” attended by intellectuals, former administrative officials, and industrial experts from the state. Among those present at the session were Rajya Sabha Member Satnam Singh Sandhu, BJP Punjab President Sunil Jakhar, and former Special Chief Secretary KBS Sidhu. Dr. Singh assured that if the project proves viable from both technical and practical perspectives, the government will consider all possible options to establish the nuclear power plant in Patiala. It is noteworthy that the proposal to set up a nuclear plant in Daroli village of Patiala first emerged in the early 2000s but remained pending for a long time. The minister stated that all conditions related to the establishment of the plant will now be reviewed afresh. He added that if the project materialises, it could bring a major transformation in Punjab’s energy sector by ensuring affordable and uninterrupted power supply to industries.
