Mohammad Noman Ashraf Wins AMU Students’ Union President Post, Women Make Strong Gains

: Women candidates have made history in the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Students’ Union elections, winning six of the 13 positions, including the post of vice-president, according to the results announced on Friday.

Nashra Naeem has become the first woman to be elected vice-president of the AMU Students’ Union in the institution's 105-year history. She secured 7,091 votes, defeating her nearest rival, who received 5,818 votes.

Women candidates also achieved a record performance in the cabinet elections, winning five of the 10 cabinet member positions. Their success marks a significant increase in women's representation in the university's student leadership.

In the presidential contest, Mohammad Noman Ashraf emerged victorious with a margin of more than 4,100 votes. Mohammad Hamdan was elected secretary of the students’ union.

The election results were announced by Professor Javed Talib, Chief Election Officer for the AMU Students’ Union and AMU Court elections, and Professor Nazia Hasan, Chief Election Officer for the Women's College Students’ Union elections.

This year's elections were particularly significant as they were held after a gap of eight years. Students had been organising continuous protests over the past three years before the elections took place.

A senior faculty member said the Gen Z protests had also influenced the election process and its outcome.

AMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Naima Khatoon appreciated the peaceful conduct of the elections and congratulated the university community on the completion of the electoral process.
