Youth Brutally Assaulted Inside MDU Campus, Security Arrangements Under Scrutiny

The brutal assault of a young man, identified as Dev, inside Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) in Rohtak has once again brought campus security arrangements under scrutiny.
The incident took place on Wednesday when a group of assailants allegedly attacked Dev on the university campus. He sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. A video of the assault subsequently went viral on social media, triggering concern among students and faculty members.
According to reports, the incident was linked to an old enmity. The police have registered a case against the alleged assailants and initiated an investigation into the matter.
Reports said a group of youths attacked Dev near the FDC canteen. The assailants allegedly dragged him outside the canteen and repeatedly assaulted him with iron pans and spoons, leaving him seriously injured.
The incident has also raised questions about the effectiveness of security arrangements at the university, particularly as there are claims that visitors are subjected to security checks at the main entrance.
Previous incidents add to security concerns
The latest assault is not the first violent incident reported on the MDU campus.
In December last year, a group of youths allegedly attempted to run over two students in a Scorpio outside the Law Department. That incident had also prompted concerns about the movement of outsiders on the campus and the effectiveness of existing security arrangements.
The recurrence of such incidents has brought renewed attention to the need for measures aimed at preventing violent confrontations and ensuring the safety of students, faculty members and other people on the university premises.
University orders probe, plans security review
MDU Vice-Chancellor Prof Milap Punia described the latest incident as unfortunate and highly condemnable. He said there was no place for indiscipline or violence on the premises of a prestigious educational institution.
The Vice-Chancellor said the matter would be investigated by the Proctorial Board and that strict disciplinary action would be taken under the university's rules and regulations.
He further said a high-level security advisory committee had already been constituted to recommend measures for strengthening security on the campus. Necessary action would be initiated based on the committee's recommendations and the action plan suggested by it.
Prof Punia reiterated that the university would take strict disciplinary action against students found violating the law or engaging in indiscipline and misconduct on the campus.
Regarding the immediate response to the incident, the Vice-Chancellor said university security officials reached the spot promptly and the police administration was informed without delay
